Have you ever wondered if the way you currently train is really changing your staff’s behaviors?

The Friedman Group has tried, tested and reviewed hundreds of training techniques over the last 26 years, and we have developed a unique approach. Our proprietary form of instruction, Self Track, is based on real on-the-floor experience and has delivered results time and time again like no other. We currently use Self Track in many of our sales training and certification programs and incorporate this methodology into many of our custom client solutions.

In traditional training, be it one-on-one, classroom, computer-based or other formats, there is no way to know if the student really understands, and more importantly, can apply what was taught. At the end of the session, the teacher or trainer is done, but the student may not be. How do you know if the student really "got it"? This is the premise that forms the basis for the Self Track self-paced learning method. Because everyone learns new information at a different pace and comprehension level, traditional teaching fails to guarantee that all students are equally trained. In most learning scenarios, students tend to memorize what they need to know to pass a test. But very little is retained past that point, and students would be hard pressed to actually apply that information in their lives.

In the Self Track learning system, students use checksheets, a structured system for driving the learning process that checks for comprehension and ability to apply what they learned through a series of checkouts. Each checkout requires the successful completion of exercises, essays, role plays, demonstrations or other feedback methods, before students are allowed to move on to the next step. What hinders most students is going past something that they did not fully understand, and then trying to build on that misunderstood information. Similar to building a house, if the foundation is weak, the structure will never be strong and may eventually topple.

In the Self Track system, when students are deficient in a step, their instructor or coach has them go back and clear up any misunderstandings and go through the checkout process again before moving on. Learning is not a race. There is no point in speeding through it if you don't really get it. Self Track allows individuals to learn at their own pace, rather than the instructor's or other students’ pace. This guarantees that the foundation to their learning is solid, and they will actually be able to apply what they've learned.
